Nat loved it immediately and he sat down at the piano and ran it down a couple of times. Interestingly, Nat used this same ending every time he recorded the song. As much as Nat liked the song, he told Mel that it would be wrong to record it with just The Trio, that it deserved a bigger showcase.
Carlos Gastel, who was managing both Nat and Mel at the time, tried to persuade Capitol Records to use a few strings just for this one song. No luck. He was determined to have his way; displaying a rare instance of stubbornness.

Nat convinced Capitol to let him re-record it, this time with a string section. A modest orchestral roster, to be sure, but a beginning, an augur of things to come for Nat Cole. The session turned out perfectly, and became a watershed recording in his career. Contrary to what many think, this was an entirely new session, not just the addition of some strings to the June 14th date.
Author, reformer and public servant Henry Cole was the creator of the humble Christmas card
This was the recording that Capitol reissued every holiday season for the next 7 years, and each year it would chart in the top 5. Any wonder that Capitol Records was elated? I want to thank both MaestroDavros and Clark V Kauffman for explaining why this iconic Christmas album from Nat could stand a total re-mix and remaster. I believe they have nailed these issues succinctly and better than I did in my previous posts.

I'm disappointed, as others here are, that this iconic album didnt get a total remix and remaster from the un-distorted multitracks. Its funny tho. The last couple of years, I have found myself just pulling out my first pressing Capitol Rainbow LP stereo of course and enjoying the album that way, Capitol mastering warts and all.
My tube amp seems to really like this pressing. Merry Christmas, everyone! Clark V Kauffman and RSteven like this. Location: helmetta, nj usa.
I still like the SACD of this album better. As others have said too much reverb the title track sounds like an echo chamber. Location: Pittsburgh, PA. It's nice to see the original cover back! Still no-noised to death? Smashed to loudness and back? Just saw an ad for this today and I'm curious. RSteven , Dec 2, I was digging through a box of Christmas ornaments last night and found a mix-tape cassette I made back around with Nat's Christmas album on one side of the tape and Doris Day's Christmas album on the other.
I haven't played a cassette in probably 10 years, but it looks too nice to toss. Maybe I'll hang it from the tree! Clark V Kauffman , Dec 2, Location: United States Of America. I do remember the detail and presence in NKC's vocals seeming to be right in my ear with that pronounced soft fuzzy throated low register sustained tone he always had.

Top Reviews Most recent Top Reviews. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Nat King Cole was way before his time. Too bad he passed away so soon. We could have had a lot more beautiful music from him.
I'm just sorry the generations since his passing probably don't know what they're missing by not listening to his beautiful voice. It's here to be purchased at great prices and listened to. One can't help but be touched by it and just love it. I agree with everyone else, you can't have Christmas without some of our generations' singers, and Nat King Cole is surely one of them. I haven't heard any, but then again I don't listen to the popular music of today.
They would probably botch it all up so that I wouldn't even recognize it as Christmas music. I'm not a music expert, I just know what I like and when I hear it, and it does not bother me if the people who made it possible to hear this music again after all these years didn't get it as "sharp" or less this or more of that. I'm just not that interested in all of that. So long as it sounds just as good as it did back then, and one must understand that all of that technology wasn't available back then, so one cannot expect that music to sound like it was recorded yesterday. I just want to hear Nat King Cole singing however I can get him.
I've been shopping for them all on CDs to replace my old worn out things. I hate Christmas music but love Nat King Cole. This is the only Christmas album I can listen to over and over 12 months per year. Nobody does it better! It took along time to arrive. It finally arrived a few days ago and oh my goodness One person found this helpful. I have the record album of this from the 's it was my Mom's and one of her fav Christmas album-mine too.
I'm happy to have found this CD e all the original songs plus bonus of a few more!
